RECOVERY JOURNAL / DOCUMENTATION

A photo checklist after flood damage

A well-organized record helps you explain what happened. Collect only what you can safely document, then ask your insurer or property manager what else they need.

Start with safe views

Take wide views that establish the room or exterior location, then closer images of visible damage. Do not enter floodwater or a structurally unsafe space for a photograph. Follow local instructions about returning home.

Organize belongings separately

Create a list of damaged items with descriptions and any purchase records you have. Keep the original image files and label copies by room and date. Avoid including private documents or other people’s personal details when sharing photos.

Record conversations and work

Keep dated notes of calls, written estimates and authorizations. Ask your insurer what evidence is needed before items are removed. Do not delay urgent safety measures to collect paperwork; document what is safely possible.

Keep claims and contractor decisions distinct

An estimate does not establish insurance coverage. Your insurer handles policy questions, while your agreement with the provider defines the work you authorize. Keep both sets of records together but confirm each party’s responsibilities directly.
