Water damage: what to do first

A clear first step helps when everything feels urgent. Protect people, then establish what happened and who needs to be contacted. This guide does not replace an on-site safety assessment.

01 / Put people first

Stay out of areas with standing water near electrical equipment, structural damage or suspected contamination. Follow local evacuation instructions. If there is immediate danger, call 911. Never enter moving floodwater to reach a property.

02 / Establish the source safely

If an indoor leak can be stopped without entering a hazardous area, use a familiar, safely accessible water shutoff. Do not attempt electrical work or enter wet areas to reach a breaker. Ask the appropriate utility or a qualified professional for assistance.

03 / Make a record

From a safe location, take dated photos and note when you discovered the damage. Contact your insurer or property manager. Keep a list of affected belongings and receipts for temporary protection; ask before disposing of damaged property.

04 / Arrange assessment and drying

Ask a provider to identify affected materials and contamination before work begins. Get the emergency scope, equipment billing and approval process in writing. Outdoor floodwater and sewage require particular care; do not use a household cleanup plan without professional advice.
